Centre for Molecular Medicine

No description

Since 2011, the Centre for Molecular Medicine (CMM) has been an integral part of the CEITEC consortium and is significantly involved in its research activities, including the transfer of research results into practice.

The main goal of CMM is to better understand the underlying molecular mechanisms in major diseases, especially cancer and inherited disorders, and to use bioinformatics and machine learning approaches to analyse genomic data. Researchers in CMM focus on different types of leukaemias and solid tumours, inherited disorders, and the identification of novel molecular targets for targeted therapies, thereby expanding the possibilities of personalised medicine for a range of diseases. Specifically, the researchers are studying the human germline and cancer genome, the tumor microenvironment, transcription regulation, adaptive and innate immunity, the role of RNA modifications in RNA processing, stability and regulation of gene expression, the role of the little-studied CDKs (cyclin-dependent kinases) in transcription regulation, the use of deep learning methods and neural networks to model the properties of different genomic regions, and many other areas of research, including archaeogenetics. In various cancers, our researchers have made great efforts to identify diagnostic and predictive markers (e.g. key gene mutations, miRNA and lincRNA expression profiles) and to introduce their testing into clinical practice. CMM has exceptional research potential as it covers a broad research area and allows close collaboration in an interdisciplinary setting.

The CMM also includes Core Facility Genomics (Genomika) and Core Facility Bioinformatics (BioIt), which provide genomic analysis and access to cutting-edge genomic instrumentation, as well as support, training and infrastructure services for researchers within CEITEC.

The relocation of the CMM laboratories to the BioPharma Hub has key potential for achieving breakthroughs in molecular medicine and pharmaceutics. The close collaboration and physical connection between the Faculty of Pharmacy and CMM will expand the possibilities for collaboration in the field of drug development and optimization, studying the mechanism of action of drugs, or research in the field of personalized medicine. At the same time, it will facilitate education and research with the possibility of involving students from the Faculty of Pharmacy in CMM research projects, which will support the career start of the young generation of scientists and will also lead to an expansion of the range of students working in CMM.
